Norfolk status A very variable species. Woodland, heathland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens.
Very difficult to distinguish from, and perhaps conspecific with, Small Engrailed. Recent DNA profiles have apparently proven Engrailed and Small Engrailed are one and the same.
Some still believe them to be separate species, believing that Small Engrailed is paler and flies in May and June, whereas Engrailed (E. bistortata) flies in two generations, March and then in July and August.
Recorded in 61 (88%) of 69 10k Squares. First Recorded in 1873. Last Recorded in 2013.
