Widespread and common.
Broad-leaved woodland, heathland, fens, scrub and increasingly urban areas where food plants found.

Occasionally melanic dark forms can occur, more common in northern England and the Midlands, in industrial areas.

Distinctive caterpillar is pale green, and is covered with extremely long whitish hairs.
