Chalk downs and scrubland where buckthorn grows, and damp wooded areas and hedgerows where alder buckthorn occurs.

Similar to A. badiana. More characteristic chestnut-brown forewing markings.

Larval records of leaf spinning on Alder Buckthorn in 2006 and recent Breckland records.
