Found on riverbanks, fens & marshes, favouring low lying damp situations prone to flooding.
The large distinctive adult moth occasionally comes to light otherwise seldom seen.

Larvae overwinter three or four times, the final time in a cocoon, feeding internally by boring through the bark and heartwood of a wide variety of broad-leaved trees, including sallows, willows and poplars, normally in old or damaged trees where it can gain easier access.
English name from the strong 'goaty' odour of the caterpillar.

Regularly recorded in West Norfolk fenland, especially at WWT Welney.
