Local, mainly in the Brecks.
Heathland, coastal and other grasslands, fen, open woodland, scrub.
The males fly in the afternoon, females tend to fly only at night.
The distinctive black/brown and tan very hairy caterpillars often occur in great profusion in the Autumn. Early instar larvae have distinct yellow rings.Recorded in 32 (43%) of 74 10k Squares.
