Widespread.
Britain's only resident member of the Saturniidae family.
Heathland, fens, woodland and hedgerows.

The males, which have bright orange hindwings, fly during the day in search of the greyer females, which fly at night.

Recently well recorded across Norfolk due to the use of newly developed pheromone lures.

Larvae are also regularly recorded at all instars, especially the distinctive green fully grown caterpillars with black hoops containing yellow wart-like spots.
