Broad-leaved woodland, scrub, heathland, hedgerows and gardens. Overwinters as an adult.

Highly variable colours from plain to strongly marbled. Separated from Dark Chestnut by the blunt wing tip (apex) and rounded outer edge (termen) of the forewing.
