Common and widespread.
Characteristic three fine cross-lines.
Grassland, heathland, fens, open woodland, scrub and gardens.

Occasionally a couple of aberrations occur, ab. semifuscans with half of the forewing a darker colour, and ab. obscura very dark with cross-lines hard to see.
