Common immigrant from mainland Europe.
Can be found in any habitat under favourable conditions with many thousands recorded at coastal sites.
Whole fields of crops were destroyed in a great immigration of 1891 [MBGBI 3:99]
A vast migrant swarm was recorded nationally in 2016, with several million estimated in Norfolk the first week of June.
