Widespread.
Coastal sandhills, waste ground, grassland, fens, heathland, scrub and dampish areas.
Plain looking moth, usually with a distinct yellowish suffusion around the head and the base of the forewings.

Rarely all dark specimens can occur and may potentially cause confusion between this species and Aphelia unitana and A. viburnana.

(note 2019 genus change from Aphelia paleana to Zelotherses paleana)
