Endothenia gentianaeana
Teasel Marble

(Hübner, 1799)1097 / 49.186

Norfolk status
Common.
Rough uncultivated ground, waysides, embankments and similar situations where common teasel grows.

Usually much larger than the other two UK species of Endothenia but some small specimens do occur and can cause problems. E. gentianaeana usually shows more violet or greyish areas to the tornal and basal areas of the forewing but these markings can vary considerably, especially the extent of white in the basal area and in the black spots present. An inconspicous white discocellular spot present on the outer margin of the median fascia (this can be hard to discern depending on the amount of markings around it) subterminal fascia weakly violet with several scattered small black dots. JC.

Can be determined by hindwing colour, otherwise Gen. Det.

E. marginana - White with a narrow dark border.
E. gentianaeana - Uniformly dark.
E. oblongana - Dark, pale towards the base.

Records only date from 1994, but well recorded in recent years. Frequently recorded as larvae in Common Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) seedheads. Larvae must be examined and show lack of anal comb to eliminate E. marginana.

Determination by Genitalia Examination (gen. det.) Required

Recorded in 31 (42%) of 74 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1960.
Last Recorded in 2024.
