Very similar to E. scutulana. This species was until recently considered to be just a small form of E. scutulana.
Unlike E. scutulana may be found on Common Knapweed.
Male shows dark hindwing separating it from male E. scutulana (which has a pale hindwing), generally smaller and shows less white on the forewing. Female would require gen. det. for confirmation.
First listed in Norfolk by Barrett in 1874. The true status of this species remains uncertain owing to confusion with E. scutulana, which was formerly treated as conspecific.
Confirmed recent records from Catfield (A.Beaumont, 2006), Emily's Wood, Weeting (D.Hipperson, 2011) and Wiggenhall St. Mary Magdalen (C.Sheppard, 2011). Several in recent years.
