Largest of the four Dioryctria.
Conifer plantations and heathland.

Smoother sub-terminal line on the forewing in D. sylvestrella than with D. abietella.
In addition, the sub-terminal line approaches the dorsum almost at a right-angle in D. sylvestrella.
